“Warmed up? Ready to go? Well alright!” says Belew to the crowd at Symphony Hall. Belew’s triggered voice on Neurotica contains both first and second verses running simultaneously after the band come out of Thrak. It’s clearly a gaff of sorts but it adds to the frenetic evocation of a busy New York teeming with exotic life. Crimson have a bit of a spring in their step tonight with People being particularly edgy and rambunctious on the low end of things. Levin and Gunn’s improv prior to Elephant Talk is a slowly unfurling piece as notes fade in and out, passing each other, in brief flares of brightness and intensity. There’s the making of a rock-like stomp led by Levin across which Gunn opens up his laser beam-style soloing. This listener wishes the rest of the band had come in behind that groove as it sounded like an idea waiting to be developed further. Levin caught the attention of concert eye-witness Bill Lantz who later observed on ET “Noteworthy in LTiA pt 2 was Tony's bass lines, especially toward the very end. He found a different groove and caught everyones attention on stage. Listen for it.”
