These are memories and impressions from the present day of an event experience when I had just turned 15.
This was a concert of new and challenging material. I was captivated from beginning right to the end: a blistering performance of Schizoid Man. This was a concert of new and challenging material. I was captivated from beginning right to the end: a blistering performance of Schizoid Man. I sat near the front on the left of the band, a great view of all the band. Powerful drumming from Bill Bruford, great vocals and bass from John Wetton, wonderful guitar and sitting on a stool from the great man Fripp (I didn't know about that at the time), atmospheric violin from Cross and ... Jamie Muir.
One of my abiding memories is of a percussion solo during which was a moment when he played no instrument, made no sound but danced keeping the rhythm going while we watched in silence!
I remember thinking that if I stayed for the encore, I would miss the last bus home. I missed it of course and it was worth it!
Whenever I think of the late John Wetton, I think of him then, standing at the microphone belting out 21st Century Schizoid man.
I saw Crimson in Cardiff a few years ago. They start and finish earlier than they used to but they still finished with Schizoid Man. This time there were tears in my eyes.
Fripp still sat on his stool.
I had plenty of time but I still missed the last bus home.
