Tony Levin is on record as saying that without doubt the hardest part he ever had to play on the Chapman Stick was the bass line to The ConstruKction Of Light. Originally written by Trey Gunn, Levin had to prepare himself for the number first of all by sitting down and then concentrating on his finger positions in order to get through the piece as credibly and as fluently as he was able. Some nights it worked and other nights it would be a challenge. As Fripp and Jaksyzk’s interlocking guitars chimed, Levin in particular was under the spotlight. On the evidence of tonight’s performance, all that focus and intense attention paid off. You might think that it got easier the more you did it but Levin once said that this number was always something of a hurdle to be surmounted.
