“Being a public-type person is a very difficult role for me. I don’t think temperamentally I’m awfully well suited to it but, for the period of time I’ve set aside to do it, how can I embrace it as well as I may? For me it’s in fairly small situations where although there is some degree of difference, because we’re fulfilling different roles between the musician and the audience, that the barriers are as low as we might have. There’s very little I could do to hide myself from you if you became angry or shout rude comments to me. There’s not an awful lot I could do to prevent that. On the other hand I could come up to one or two of you and put you on the spot..something is possible I think that wouldn’t be possible in a three-thousand seater.”
