“Feel free to jump around as you see fit” says Barry Andrews after the opening number of the LoG’s 15th show. Posterity does not record with the young Parisians gathered in the Bataclan took his advice or not, but the music we hear suggests that had they done they would have had a jolly good time of it. There’s a slightly manic quality to Trap as Fripp and Andrews make that steep ascent up the scales, as Lee and TooBad maintain an implacable base camp; staying in rigid formation to enable the highclimbers to do their thing. That rhythmic discipline is crucial to the success of the Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx outings, where Fripp’s brand of fretboard mayhem howls and yowls with such abandon: one slip from the bass and drums and the whole thing would tumble into chaos. Of course this applies to most of the LoG’s material including a wonderfully savage reading of Dislocated, which the crowd clap along to in the quiet section in a wonderfully cool, laid-back Parisian kind of way. Once again, the wistful Untitled piece - a duet between Andrews and Fripp - works its gentle magic on the room, perhaps enabling the rhythm buddies a breathing space and offering a respite from the punishing dance ethic. That reverie doesn’t last too long as it’s followed with a bludgeoning second serving of Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx. However the one to really listen out for is the third version at the end of the gig. If you like Fripp’s revved-up chordal attacks of Sailors Tale and LTIA II coda, then this one is a real treat: one minute and three seconds of sustained, furious and uninterrupted attack. It’s a wonder the guitarist didn’t break his wrists on that one!
