There are points within the gig where Crimson take on a very different identity. When Fripp, Bruford and Mastelotto team up for B’Boom, Robert’s swirling electronic washes and the galloping drums it creates a hybrid electronica that’s highly intriguing. Fripp was no stranger to such textures, having worked with the likes of The Orb and Future Sound Of London and his own explorations with Radiophonics. Here however, with the frantic interplay of drums it takes on a very different character and there’s a sense that there was more in this direction to explore. The improvisation sections bookended by the crunching Thrak theme offer another facet of the Crimson beast. Brimming with a frenetic array of fierce, acerbic noises, staccato incursions and explosive runs, things are perhaps a little too dense and claustrophobic. Almost certainly what was intended!
