A brooding ‘scape opens upon the G3 crowd wherein the controls seem set to maximum “bum you out” mode. However, the pensive mood becomes flecked with shafts of sunlight after a short hovering transition. The melody here is something that Fripp’s been playing for years (heard on album as Bringing Down The Light from The First Day by Fripp and Sylvian). It’s a tender caress of a tune from which Fripp plays a beautiful soaring solo. Some G3 attendees felt compelled to help things along as however as Satch fan Okammad makes clear. “Me and my friend sat and made dolphine and whale sounds, just to make the time go faster.”
Not everyone agreed however. Falkenberg writes that Fripp for him was “a perfect starter for the show. Some people maybe found it too demanding and chose to speak (shout) amongst themselves instead. Shame. Fripp proved again to be one of rock's brightest musicians!”
The coda of Improv III, has Fripp delving into some very low resonant notes rumbling through the venue, before lifting things to a radiant conclusion; a classic soundscape moment.
