“We’ve had a great run here in my hometown...” says Belew near the end of the last of
four shows in just three days in the intimate surroundings of 12th & Porter. How intimate? Nashville resident Alan provided this description for ET readers ahead of the gigs. “It is a wonderfully small club with plenty of tables and a small balcony. For anyone fortunate enough to catch any or all of the shows, you should be in for a real treat...there really is no bad seat in the house (especially if you nab a chair on the first row of the balcony)” Those ringside seats enabled appreciative punters to see Crimson in the process of homing and refining approaches to new material. Playing something in the studio is one thing but coming to grips with it in concert, where all kinds of variables enter the picture is another. The running notes section of FraKctured is executed with the kind of conviction and authority that had only been hinted at on its previous outings. As Gunn and Fripp double up on the ascending outro Belew can be heard whooping with delight. The lurching Oyster Soup provides Belew with an opportunity to serve up a wonderfully unhinged solo, all delivered with that trademark grin. There’s all kinds of fun going on in there.
