Here’s a real treat. Mel Collins improvising to the song part of Starless. The unrestrained lyricism of the playing, and the sense of melancholic yearning in the notes is incredibly moving. Isolated away from the main instruments, this unused take at times sounds similar to the chilled meditative work of Jan Garbarek or John Surman. Of course the beauty and elegance contained in these show exactly why Fripp once called Mel Collins the guv’nor and still does!

This track is available, as be part of Mr Stormy's next bumper collection. His Fourth year of treasures from the murky, cavernous DGM archives, are now available for your fetishization .

Superb sax solo by Mister Mel Collins. Another Mr. Stormy’s gem. What more can I say ? Beautiful. Amazing. Btw, did you notice that the KC line-up as presented on the page features all the 4 band members, although they don’t appear on the tape, and no Mel Collins ? Thanks for all these great Monday gifts. Cheers.

An interesting perspective
Sid is correct to draw comparisons to Garbarek and his ilk when describing this short-but-sweet download. It’s interesting how these notes and phrases, once isolated from their source material, almost begin to take on a life of their own.It’s great that DGM makes these little snatches of music, which would otherwise never end up on a traditional release and languish in obscurity, available as free downloads (and, for the audiophiles, FLAC compilations). Thank you!
