Just four days after completing a solo Soundscapes tour around various sacred spaces in the UK Fripp is now touring in Europe with The League Of Crafty Guitarists. During the rehearsals for the first date of tour in Rome, Fripp notes in his diary, “The LCG playing with Soundscapes is a new development. This requires some focus from the Soundscaper, plus firing up his brain & hands to play several pieces with the League. My guitar playing & musical thinking is in a different place, so a rapid recalibration of the playing–person is underway.”
The performance here manages to be both tethered to the present day while also existing outside the concerns and factors that might ordinarily shape the music being played. Queer Space Harmonic Minor in particular is outstanding in this respect.
Of the show itself Fripp’s diary records: “A respectable attendance of perhaps 1200 - 1300. The audience were exceptionally generous. The LCG performed honourably and were very well received, justly so. Throughout the performance, a sense of goodwill was tangible. If all audiences were like this, my performance life would have been very much a different experience.”
