Roderich from Germany was on holiday when he happened upon the Chapter House at Exeter Cathedral. “All in all, a very special & moving hour this was for me. The most remarkable point for me was to again witness the huge difference between live performance and recording (which isn't of course something new for me especially since i go to a lot of concerts in classical music, especially piano music recitals). but here, i have never before been so directly involved in the process of building up sounds and structures, the process of a piece of music evolving, including the operating of dials and knobs - and I never before have understood my active role as a listener within the process of music enfolding better than on this occasion - as a result I think that I now fully understand Mr. Fripp's statements on music, performance, and listening. So this is perhaps the most important effect of the Exeter churchscapes on myself, and, my son and my wife and even my usually sceptic, only classical music-loving dad enjoyed these hour very much - what more could i hope for?”

I recall this gig for several special reasons - this was the first time I’d seen Robert Fripp since the League of Gentlemen tour, and I’d had to rush down to Exeter from just south of Bristol immediately after returning from holiday in Crete. As it happened, I arrived early and had opportunity to speak with Sid Smith beforehand, but also catch a glimpse from the doorway of the venue of a special moment - Robert soundchecking in the empty Chapter House of the Cathedral. The gig itself was utterly mesmerising, both in terms of the music played and the atmosphere evoked, and the moment will stay with me forever. It is the only time in my life that live music, in this exquisitely beautiful form, has actually been so emotionally stirring as to move me to tears. I have never, before or since, engaged with music on this personal a level. Thank you for making this available. Ash
