It’s a newly rechristened King Crimson just eight gigs into their European tour and a brand new album under their belt that are ushered onstage to a fanfare of Frippertronics.[endtease] With the album, Discipline, having been released the previous month, this audience recording shows they get a rapturous reception as the boys in the band start joyfully tearing the place apart.

Frame By Frame is especially ferocious, and devotees of The Sheltering Sky will be pleased that not only is Fripp most definitely 'on', he also adds a spooky line or two on the Roland keyboard. Also of interest is an early arrangement of Neil and Jack and Me still in a state of flux and nearly being ahem, fluxed up entirely in places. Having emerged out of the first writing sessions in April that year it still has a way to go before settling down. Briefly unleashed from the structured material, Bruford lets rip on an improvised intro to the encore, Thela. When Fripp joins in, it sounds like a precursor to Requiem – a small but dazzling vignette of astonishing power. Though marred in places by some tuning problems this shows just how formidable KC ‘81 really was.

Great
It’s now about 8 years I first heard this excellent bootleg. A lot has happened in the meantime, and the amount of just a few couple of downloads has now developed to hundreds of sets / hours of music. This performance in Köln is still outstanding - a landmark by every aspect.(I concede even the audience chatter is pretty much fun; I believe the bootlegger speaking German originates from The Netherlands). The sheer energy of the playing with so much fun involved is remarkable.Highly recommended...

Blistering Performance
Totally perfect and energic performance...  The band were at their peak on this night, from the opening Frippertronics, The Sheltering Sky, Larks’ Tongues In Aspic - Pt II and the surprise encore Thela Hun Ginjeet (out of the Discipline Tour setlist).  The band surprise every single audience member, specially Mr. Fripp with his "Darkness Synthesizer Of Doom" notes on The Sheltering Sky.  That was another great night with a great band, King cRimson... -------------...

Rising synergy captured
Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a studio album, it is a bootleg. You will hear people talking sometimes, but like some polite audiences they do actually stop talking while the musicians are playing. And play they do. That "je ne sais quoi" that people go to live performances to experience, it’s here in this recording. Falling apart, but coming together; the joy of coming together, the clumsiness of new friends, allows for a creative edge that cannot be contrived. I feel like a sonic voyeur o...
