“Hello? Hello? Hello very much,” says a Hawaiian-shirted Adrian Belew as he greets a supportive crowd before a careering version of Frame By Frame. A very listenable audience recording demonstrates that Crimson is cooking tonight as a hyper-fast Discipline and rambunctious Thela Hun Ginjeet has already proved.

The interlocking style that defines this incarnation might be traced back to Fracture and, more recently, the pointillistic adventures of The League Of Gentlemen. Yet regardless of the vintage of its antecedence Frame By Frame sounds utterly fresh and contemporary in 1981, pulling Crimson with the reins of modernity, hurtling along at breakneck speed.

There are several moments within the piece where every single element appears to be in a state of constant movement and excited agitation. Little wonder it draws a hearty roar of approval when the breaks are abruptly applied. By contrast, Red appears to lumber into the building with a slow but surly belligerence, which although very different in concept is no less compelling.
