The use of cello on this section of Starless is just one of several examples of the way Crimson augmented their sound during the making of what would turn out to be their final studio album of the 1970s.
The score for the part, as with other string additions elsewhere on this track and the album, came from Robert who quickly wrote out the notes for the cellist in Olympic Studios.
The pathos in this small section, though subtle, is just one of the factors that help makes Starless one of King Crimson’s best-loved tunes. Sadly the name of the player supplying this yearning melody is lost to posterity.
