“Firstly I want you to realise you’re not going to enjoy this evening. This is serious. This is art. You may also see just outside the doors as you leave wonderful T-shirts on sale. They’re only $8 each. I designed with my manager Patrick and they ‘The Lecture 1983. Contents: one small mobile intelligent unite’ with my signature underneath. And they’re $2 less than comparable T-shirts, and I get nearly all the money. There is of course a contradiction between art and the commodity culture and this dilemma has been exercising me for some 15 years. For that period of time I’ve endeavoured to earn my living from playing music and have often been struck by the paradox of trying to be a human being and a professional musician simultaneously. The presentation I’m about to make is an approach I’ve been developing recently towards getting a better insight into that contradiction.”
