When King Crimson goes into Red large swathes of the audience usually, to use the colloquial Philadelphia phrase, ‘lose their shit’ and the second night at the Keswick is no exception. At this point, there are some members of the band who have been playing this piece for well over a decade. However, there are still razor-sharp man-traps waiting to snap at the unwary Crim whose fingers go astray not only here but elsewhere throughout the set.

As with all Crim clams, it’s really about the recovery and so as they rumble along we get to witness many moments of heroic resurrection and redemption. Fripp turns in a concise and powerful solo on Dinosaur and an energetically-paced Talking Drum into LTIA really builds into something special.

As the focus within the music drifts and slips in places, it’s obvious that the double drumming between Gavin and Pat is truly this tour’s secret weapon and it puts a super-charged fuel into KC’s tank all the while moving with a graceful economy. Therefore it’s no surprise that B’Boom is one of the most satisfying numbers of the set. While there are some fiery individual moments to be savoured across the gig as a whole the collective spirit, though willing, is sometimes weaker than it should be at this point in the tour.
