As the League head north, possibly chastened by the previous evening’s encounter with a mouthy fan in London, there’s only a rather fleeting stage announcement from Fripp tonight. There’s a business-like feel to the concert which is not to say that it’s in any way deficient or lacking. Rather, the band maintain a tight focus on the notes perhaps rather than it’s spirit. Major hits are scored with Hepataparaparshinokh and the wild-card sorties that are Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx I & II have the effect of bulldozing aside any doubts or worries about such matters. Farewell Johnny Brill, taken at an almost languid pace, would make a great theme for an imaginary Western. You can almost hear those Hugo Montenegro voices oohing and aahing along with the main tune! “The last blast of the night” as Fripp says is a sprightly Eye Needle with its volatile mix of minimalist ethic and full-on rock n’ roll. Happily for punters in the past and the present, a further two numbers are coaxed from the team.

Fantastic to be able to own this show after all these years! The Russell Club was one of my old stamping grounds and I often recorded bands who played there. During this show, my tape was confiscated by the management - no problems, each band to its own policy! But really great to be able to re-live this after so long! I loved LoG and this is so much better and more satisfying than the abbreviated album... Any chance that the November show from Manchester Polytechnic could be added? (hint...
