The Name Game

Momentous days are filled with mundane activities rather than any lightning bolt epiphanies. Thus Ian McDonald records in his dairy for January 22nd 1969 that he got up at three in the afternoon and washed his hair… Almost as an afterthought, he adds to his diary the news that it “looks as though we’re called ‘King Crimson’” the very first time the name appears in McDonald’s journal of the time.

I seem to recall drummer Michael Giles never committed himself to the name King Crimson, but that Michael’s assent / acceptance / approval was assumed in the absence of veto and/or objection. But then, Michael never committed himself to accepting Fripp as a member of Giles, Giles & Fripp either.

19.30  An afternoon of practicing & now an e-flurry…

I would like to offer a description of the following (true) events that have recently taken place in our home… Our 2nd child was born on January 5, 2006 and U… & I are the happy parents of a new baby girl. We have a wonderful 4 yr old boy who enjoys a wide variety of music, including "quiet Robert Fripp" i.e. Soundscapes.

On Christmas Eve, after everything was ready for Christmas, my wife - 37 weeks pregnant - lay down on the couch for a rest and I played  her some of the new soundscapes that I had been enjoying. She loved the music, but the wild thing was the reaction of the baby. I could see her tummy rippling and undulating from across the room while "Affirmation: IMAC" was playing. This wasn’t just your standard baby "kick-kick thump-thump" stuff. This was like watching waves roll in at the seashore. Twisting and turning in gentle sways as the piece continued to build. When the music stopped, so too did the movement.

At no other point during the pregnancy did the baby demonstrate movement like this. Curiosity piqued, we of course experimented with other music: Mozart, jazz, flute concerti, oboe pieces by Albinoni, etc. The odd kick or thump, but put on RF Soundscapes and watch the fun! The IMAC piece yielded the most pronounced results, but most RF pieces garnered big moves.

Now that R… is on the outside, we duplicated the experiment and had the joy of watching her react to the same piece. Her head moved towards the sound and her eyes became wide open and wondering. Lots of hand movement, but not the typical baby thrashing - slower, gentler hand motions. Fascinating to watch and a relief that she wasn’t writhing in agony while still in the womb!

This is a life with a lot of time left for writhing in agony to Soundscapes.
