When listening shifts to hearing

07.38
When listening shifts to hearing, our attention moves from what we are listening to, to the act of hearing. Our attention is no longer directed towards the music, as an external sensory "object", but towards the act of hearing.

When listening, all we have is the music we are listening to. In hearing, the whole event opens to us. Then, we become part of the music & the music becomes part of us.

We enable music to be heard by hearing it. So, two people at the same performance may be present at two different performances: one listens, and the other hears. For one, the music remains on the outside: an audible phenomenon. For the other, music becomes what it is.

Trey arrived in Nashville at lunchtime, but his equipment doesn't arrive until tonight. So, group rehearsals begin tomorrow at noon. I'm working on programs in the VG88, practising, re-learning repertoire.

The planned gig in Quebec has been cancelled: the promoter made a mistake and lost the venue. Not a great move. So, instead of 3 Canadian cities we're down to two. Two new shows in NYC will be announced this Friday.

Touring for next year is likely to be governed by the response to this upcoming tour of North America. We're considering going to so-called secondary markets: in practice, lots of the places we couldn't get to this time - Vancouver, Seattle, Portland are only 3 towns on the West Coast.

Argentina has been postponed, for various reasons. South America continues to terrify me: like Italy & Spain multiplied. But the future is inventing itself in front of us. Let's see where it leads.

The Gr33 has some very silly new sounds.

This entry is being accompanied by Volume Three of "Heavy ConstruKction" - the improv album which Pat & Bill Munyon have been assembling. This is ProjeKct at the core of Crimson, where it belongs. A hummer.

Please, no more questions for me on the Guestbook. Why so many questions divorced form necessity, wit and consideration?
