Trey arrived around 11.00, and our octotonic figures were duly examined, inverted, canonised and played as off-set power chords. This, plus a fair amount of programming. Whenever we begin a new period of playing / touring / writing, all the stuff changes. And it is stuff, but appealing and inviting stuff which, by turning around the timbres, upsets automaticisms and triggers new ones. Even if we arrive at the same place (as with the new / old "licks" referred to yesterday) we have a different sense of place; or, we know the place is the right place.
Pat's approach to electronic drums is utterly different to Adrian's. It's easy to imagine Pat in an acid house setting; or heavy club scene; or rock group of almost any period. This man is very experienced. Our last work-out of the day excites me: Trey and myself on string chords; different chords, different keys; and Pat chattering, spitting, swording and chunking through the middle of it. The balance isn't right, and I've no idea whether any of my prepared ideas have much relevance at all. We'll see.
On the completion of today's rehearsals we played Pat "Live Groove", to present the results of our P2 R&D.
T. Lev. telephoned from the modest Inn at Opryland to let us know he has arrived. Trey and Chris were concerned that the view from his room might have prompted unremitting despair, so they set off to meet and keep him from(metaphorically) tearing out his hair.
