Andy Summers and Robert Fripp :: Posted by isfahani on November 23, 2007
Since these albums have been given the remastered treatment recently - without the addition of the seemingly obligitory ’bonus tracks’ - I am writing this hoping to encourage the release of the ’other’ material from these sessions. I still consider I Advance Masked a masterpiece and I was always hoping there was more where that one came from, and now I see a picture of a box here that may prove it to be so.
Outside KC/RF catalogues & archives, there are copyright issues of varying degrees of superabiity. This particular area is complex & we won’t be approaching it.
Guitar Craft For Dummies [or basement dwellers]:: Posted by basementdweller on November 23, 2007
You might say, come to a GC Introductory course. But somehow I don’t think that is going to work. I am not a hot, young guitarist. I’m not really an instrumentalist at all.
Then why not come to an NST Introductory Weekend? Very few Crafties are hot guitarists, and not many are instrumentalists either.
Grammatical howler:: Posted by richardrj on November 26, 2007
It’s not often that one can call Robert on the impeccably polished prose of his Diary. But at last I have found a chink in his grammatical armour: "This is big excitement time for the Minx & I."This is an unfortunate example of hypercorrectness, i.e. the committing of a solecism through misunderstanding of prescriptive rules. The correct usage would be "This is big excitement time for the Minx & me."
Perhaps Mr. Richard is being kind, or he can’t have spent very long hunting around the Diary where other horrors, bloomers, bleepers, howling shouters & barbarisms in what-is-writ abound. Interesting: why the martial analogy? And why the at last I have found?
What is considered a solecism in one modality of a language may be acceptable usage in another. For example, "The world keeps turning for you and I" (10cc) is acceptable as a song lyric (see poetic license) but is considered a solecism in standard English. Rejecting convention in favor of consensus, modern descriptive linguistics generally dismisses the notion of solecisms, concentrating on how language is used, rather than how it ought to be used.
So, what might be intended by the Minx & I? as distinct from the Minx & me?
why a handshake is better than a contract:: Posted by rfwhitman on November 23, 2007
Experience has been enough to convince me that a handshake deal with a trusted person who keeps their word is superior to a contract deal almost all the time.
The key word is trusted; cf the Diary for 23rd. November. Where & when this is so, I agree with Mr. Whitman. Otherwise, the claims of honest, God-fearing family men renowned for their probity & sound business practices are better demonstrated by actions than rhetoric…
