On our four-hours plus river-journeying, one person attached themselves to me: and sucked life from me, this to an astonishing extent. They were assisted, perhaps unwittingly, by a friend; and eventually joined by an onboard-acquaintance of theirs. An attack this brutal, and effective, upon my subtle life is a surprise. Good manners are important. Nevertheless, I have revised my criteria for the degree to which I am prepared to endanger my life in close social contexts.

Awfulness, horror and pitiful lifelessness.
