14.01  Does Mr. Bob Carruthers, the popular music educator & saviour of Scottish rugby, actually have tight lips? We need to know! The answer is here

and, if this is actually a photograph of Mr. Carruthers, the answer would seem to be - yes, Mr. Carruthers has tight lips.

Until Mr. Carruthers saved Scottish rugby, I had not known how interesting the sport might be. Mr. Carruthers continues to be newsworthy, and more so as a rugby club owner than as a music educator. In the news for 31st. July…

SRU set to withdraw Edinburgh funding GARETH BLACK

THE Scottish Rugby Union has carried out its threat to cut funding from Edinburgh.

Over the weekend, the union confirmed in writing the message that Edinburgh owner Bob Carruthers had been given verbally on Thursday of last week. A letter to Edinburgh accused the club of a breaking a clause in the contract relating to the management of the team - understood to be a reference to the club’s dispute with Scott Murray, the decision to allow Chris Paterson to leave for Gloucester and the impending departure of Marcus Di Rollo - and "accordingly no further monies will be advanced".

Edinburgh have always claimed that it was the union that broke the contract first by failing to pay £186,000 that was due to the club last November, and a court claim against the union has been promised. Carruthers now claims that by failing to pay its debts, the union is "apparently insolvent". The message is clear: if the union makes an attempt to drive the club out of business, Carruthers could try to do the same to the SRU.

The Edinburgh owner has, however, moved quickly to reassure his players that they do not need to worry about their salaries. "We will pay them on time, and the next month after that and the month after that," he said…

I am sure that Edinburgh’s players may rest assured, confident in the willingness, capacity & reliability of Mr. Carruthers to pay them.

Jack ready to defend SRU

NEW Scottish Rugby Union president George Jack today broke his silence on the simmering dispute between Edinburgh Rugby and the governing body, saying the SRU has the finance available to fight any court action and would do so "vigorously."… The row centres on Edinburgh’s claim they are owed up to £400,000 by the SRU in overdue Magners League and Heineken Cup match payments. Matters came to a head when the club withdrew their 12 Scotland internationalists from a week of World Cup training last month.

In a letter to club secretaries, Jack said: "Over the last few difficult months the Union has explored every avenue to avoid legal action. In entering our agreement with Edinburgh Rugby we have offered help and practical assistance wherever possible. "However, as we have continually reminded the new Edinburgh owners, the agreements between the Union and Edinburgh Rugby form a binding contract and we expect Edinburgh to honour its obligations. This means, for example, that we expect Edinburgh to release players for Scotland duty. If they choose not to do so we will defend the Union’s position and as necessary protect our rights in the best interests of the game."
