The most satisfaction has to come from the fact that one way or another I have proved the critics wrong. I am still here and they have mostly disappeared up the infamy of their arse-holes.

MIKE UND ZEIT:: Posted by markvankempen on January 05, 2014
To elaborate on the virtues of Mike Giles: in an earlyer posting I mentioned that Mike has defined rock drumming in the 70’s, 80’s and beyond, while remaining in a class by himself… Mike can not only play in time - he arranges with time. There are multiple nuances and shifts in tempo and dynamics in every piece of the King Crimson repertoire. Mike conducted them from the drum stool… But there are still very few drummers who know what you can do with it… Why does ITCOTKC sound so even, considered, calm almost - so eerily perfect? Mainly because of Mike’s timekeeping… Mike came, did what only he could do and went, his influence spreading like a virus through ITCOTKC. Mike used his time in King Crimson to optimum effect… a merger of the learned and the spontaneous. With Mike, you just can’t hear the join.

And from Dave Stafford

fripp has said could not be replaced with one person, so he decided that the only way to get the drum sound he wanted, to replace what michael giles had brought to the 1969 king crimson – was to work with two drummers.  it’s a testament to both giles’ skill as a drummer and the level of fripp’s respect for giles as a musician, that it took two drummers of the calibre of bruford and muir, two excellent drummers, one, a brilliant percussionist, too – to replace him – that’s quite a compliment from fripp, really

There were two drummers for me at the time: Michael Giles and Tony Williams.
