A King Crimson Festival: F*O*C*K*ING AMAZING

13jul1z.jpg

… from Russia. Dear innocent DGM visitor, look at this poster (if your eyes are not attracted to the comment on the poster beneath) and ask: is King Crimson involved in this performance? An alternative question: what performance does the poster (nominally) represent? This is (almost) straightforward: the superb KTU with Trey & Pat & Kimmo (following poster-order).

So, we return to the first question: is King Crimson involved in this performance? And that answer is clear: King Crimson has nothing whatsoever to do with this performance. Equally clearly, mine is no comment on the exceptional qualities of Crimson Buddies Trey & Pat; nor upon the remarkable talent of Kimmo. When King Crimson performs, the posters make no mention of the other ventures undertaken by the players involved, which have no relevance to the performance being promoted; and were the posters to do so, there would be no room for the name King Crimson.

So, why does this poster grant capitalisation & prominent display to a band that has nothing to do with the KTU show? This is easy to answer: it is a lie. The poster is dishonest, one example of promotional dishonesty in Russia that, regrettably, is something of a norm.

The King Crimson Festival is another, but larger, example: King Crimson has nothing to do with the festival that, illegitimately, claims the name for its own. Various members of King Crimson take part, yes: and good people too. Various pieces from the repertoire? Maybe that as well, even played by interesting combinations. King Crimson? Nowhere to be seen, or heard.

I have read that Fripp politely declined to be involved with the King Crimson Festival in Russia. Actually, I don’t recall receiving a request to take part in it. But any promoter, who has a sense of KC/RF working principles & procedures, wouldn’t make the invitation. And were that same promoter, who knows the Crimson MO, to have made the invitation – well, it’s much easier to have a King Crimson Festival without either Fripp or King Crimson.
