Today at the Vicarage : The Vicarage

Am I alone in believing that the IT industry has become a home for many an incompetent conman?

Today, Dorset Internet (spit spit. boo hiss. Named and Shamed), the company who installed my server sent out one of their engineers to deal with a possible hardware fault. While here, he mentioned to me "Oy guvnor, there's a whole spare hard drive what's not doing anything. Perhaps I'll just take it on home with me".

I now learn (from a different better qualified engineer) that this hard disk was not spare, but was part of a "spandisk" (two disks made to operate as one, if I have understood correctly). He ran a DOS utility, which has probably caused the loss of all my data.

To make matters worse, the tape backup, which I paid this same company to install, was erroneously installed on the C drive, not the E drive, where all the data is installed.

I am not a litigious man, but I am tempted to test Doset Internet's public liabiility insurance.

On a happier note, a last mastertape for some work I did over 30 years ago surfaced today. Therein lies a lesson for our new hi tech methinks.
