26th June 1997

As part of the documentation for this tour the individual titles of the numbers played during Joe Satriani’s, Steve Vai’s and Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s respective sets are fully listed, as are the songs for the collective jam at the end of the evening. When it comes to the G4 of the G3 the listing correctly observes, “Robert Fripp: Does not play according to a traditional set list.”

The vast canvas Fripp presents tonight, including the ethereal choirs that manifest toward the end of the Dreamspace I and carry over into Dreamspace II, not only take the piece into another realm entirely but feel like some of the best pieces of the tour so far at least to these ears some 17 years after they were recorded.

Once again, members of the entourage are on hand, eager to help with the aural mood painting as Fripp’s diary records.

“Tonight’s venue: another open-air covered amphitheatre with grass verge stretching up and back. Warm, balmy weather. The set: 17.00 - 18.50. Mike Keneally came out and played solos over the Soundscapes, then Stu Hamm joined in, then Steve Vai took over the bass from Stu. For me, a superb treat and a wonderful event very much in keeping with the open and welcoming spirit of G3.”

Please note that Mike Keneally, Stu Hamm or Steve Vai’s contributions to this performance are not part of the recording presented here.
