Adversity comes in all shapes and sizes. For this show the happy gigster was facing with broiling temperatures, direct sunlight causing the tuning on his guitar to drift, a string on the red Fernandes snapping and even the Eventide in his rack beginning to suffer a meltdown.
Yet despite these problems there is a rich beauty in the soundscape at The Pier, and, as Robert’s diary reveals, a surprise live contribution from G3 bassist, Stu Hamm from an off-stage position:
“With 20 minutes to go I looked up, saw Stu at the FOH soundboard, and beckoned him up. Apparently, he had just said to John Sinks that he'd love to get up and play with the Soundscapes. So he did. Superb. Afterwards, Stu modified the Satriani & Fripp sign on the shared dressing rooms, crossing out Satriani. The dressing rooms became Hamm & Fripp. I'm encouraging Stu to record a solo album.”

It bought tickets for this G3 show specifically to see Robert Fripp. I dragged along one of my college friends and we took our seats up in the bleachers. It was a marvelously sunny day and as the crowd was still milling about, getting their beer and nachos ready for the main show, my friend and I were enjoying a serene and meditative soundscape set. At one point, Mr. Fripp set down his guitar and, shielding his eyes from the sun, looked out into the audience to see if anyone was paying attent...

At one point, Mr. Fripp set down his guitar and, shielding his eyes from the sun, looked out into the audience to see if anyone was paying attention. Keep in mind the loop was still playing. As he scanned in our direction my friend and I stood and cheered to show our support. After he saw us, he gestured to his guitar, as a conductor of an orchestra might acknowledge his players at the end of a symphony. We laughed heartily!
