The smoky, sweaty atmosphere of the tiny club is tangible; the place where Red makes its live debut – seven years after it was first recorded.[endtease]The ambition of what’s being attempted, let alone achieved, makes for extraordinary listening. Fast-moving and furious, even the somewhat raggy sound can’t disguise the fact that this is astonishing stuff. No wonder an excited RF noted in his dairy after the gig “This band will be colossal – it’s that good. For me, this is the band I’ve spent four years getting ready for.”Material that would form a staple part of King Crimson repertoire for the next twenty-odd years is lifted sizzling hot and startlingly new from the creative forge that was Moles. Mind those flying sparks! First released in 2000 as KCCC11.

Different versions
As previously stated, sound quality is not that good, and as historical as this show might be, what makes it more interesting for me are the different versions and approaches to the material that we are so used to hear on other releases. Different solos, the Elephant Talk ending, different passages during the songs, that alone in my opinion makes the experience of listening to this show worth listening, and if you add the historical factor, then you have a very interesting and enjoyable live doc...

When we were very young...
I got this on CD when it came out & the sound quality is not good, but there in Tony Levin’s pictures is the 17 year old me & his friends wondering what on earth they are listening to. A lot of years and significant hair loss later, I’m still looking for clues, and looking forward to taking my daughter to see the 2014 KC should they pass somewhere in reach of the South west of England.

King Crimson at Moles Club, 04-30-81
This is an audience recording whose sound quality is deplorable, but still a historic gig that is a must-have for collectors.
