Back on stage at the Painted Bride at 7.00 pm Fripp straps on the guitar and takes off into the unknown once again. The luscious folds of strings in the second ‘scape are as gentle as a caress, a stark contrast to the tremors rattling the venue’s foundation in the opening number. Yet even though the mood is gentler in tone there’s still an unsettled presence in the tidal ebb and flow. Sure enough, from the third movement onward the calm flexes out into tangled shards of steely paranoia and a restless churning. The final piece of the evening is simply astonishing in its scale and scope.
Of the two performances at the venue that day, Fripp notes in his diary, “Both audiences were patient, generous and supportive; both had worthwhile comments and questions. Evening performances seem to go deeper & further. Several Crafties were present. My Sister's "I've Been FRIPPnotised" buttons have been going a storm. And that is a completion to the performances on this leg of the ongoing Soundscapes touring.”
