The ghostly voices that usher this piece in tell us we’re no longer in Barcelona but haunting the soundstage of Milan. Given we find ourselves in a city famous for its opera perhaps it's perhaps no surprise that this opening should be so dramatic. At times like a soundtrack to a horror movie, the mood is sombre and full of foreboding. As with the previous gig, Billy Sheehan once again joined Fripp on stage.

In his diary Fripp wrote “Soundscapes seem to work for G3 audiences at around 20 minutes. This is the standard set length we have now adopted. Billy Sheehan came up again tonight & made the set. Billy is a stunning player.”

From his point in the crowd, a punter named Salvatore observed: “Intro is from a wonderful Fripp with incredible soundscapes with the help of Billy with bass. Very emotional. Really just that is worth the ticket. I understand that Bob is not easy to listen to and most of Satriani and Vai fans do not appreciate very much but he is the real legend on the stage. The old Bob musical performance is really incredible. Looking him bowing to public, clapping to Billy performance is very different from what I have seen of him before.”

The threnody is full of glowering menace and pained lamentation though being slightly truncated for the occasion, not quite unfurling to its full potential.
