Along the road from Albany to Seattle nobody in the group knew for sure if this had been a one-off event or an ongoing concern with a future. Yet there was so much vitality and energy within the music and the connection between the players was so strong it seemed inconceivable that it would not continue.
During the concert, there was a palpable sense of celebration, not only among the ecstatic capacity crowd but also clearly visible on the faces of each member of the band. Evidence of their enthusiasm was peppered throughout the set: wry smiles between Fripp and Jakszyk during The ConstruKction Of Light, now adorned with an alto sax solo that sounded as though it had always belonged to the song; Levin throwing his head back and laughing out loud in response to Mel’s solos; indulgent grins from the entire group as they watched Harrison’s virtuoso drum break during a blistering performance of 21st Century Schizoid Man.
After the show in an incredibly cramped dressing room, Fripp handed round a glass of champagne to each member, raising their glasses and toasting the future. When he asked them if they were all up for another year of Crimsonising in 2015, a collective cheer went up. Whatever plans and commitments people might have had, they would be put to one side in order to make space for the return of the King.
