26th September

The first of three nights in Chicago saw the Crims tap into something rather special as they opened the show by performing three of the six tracks from Larks’ Tongues In Aspic. While Larks’ Part I was the newcomer for this tour, The Talking Drum and Larks’ Part II had been prominently featured in the Double Trio’s set. Hearing these pieces combined makes for a very powerful experience including that 20-second sustained note from Fripp as the three drummers rattle and clash about the place. The transition from this monster piece to The Talking Drum is flawless and credit to the Chicago crowd for giving it the space to let that happen without any unnecessary whooping and hollering. The Mellotron heard slithering beneath the hand-drum section makes an extra-curricular reference to Merday Morn for all the Poseidon heads out there. Just as the piece really gets going it comes to an abrupt stop in order to leap to a sample of Jamie Muir’s car horn screeches and into bludgeoning Part 2. Phew, what a way to open a show. LTIA completists will know that the original title for Level 5, which is played later in the set, was of course Larks’ Tongues In Aspic Part V.
