Writing in Rolling Stone in July 1979, Fred Schruers’ provides this eye-witness account of Fripptronics in action. “Meanwhile, in Boston, Fripp the guitarist plays his Frippertronics improvisations. As his guitar lines punctuate the tape loop's cellolike voicings in a way that might be compared to sunlight slicing through dark, roiling clouds, his expression alternates between tension and quiet relief. Though he warned the audience they might find the program ‘indescribably tedious,’ they are with him all the way. In Boston, the tour is working; this crowd is small, listening hard, and much of Fripp's intensity seems to come from currents they supply. ‘You have every bit of the responsibility that I have,’ he reminds them. ‘Because life is ironical, I get paid for it and you don’t.’
