I asked the members of King Crimson to compose a playlist while on tour in Europe this summer. Let's start with Tony Levin's response:
I'll answer in a way that suits me, if you don't mind:
from Tony:
Listening just for pleasure is fun, but I especially treasure the records or tracks that struck me as radically different, while still musical - tracks that made me re-examine what might be possible in my own music.
Here's a list of some that come to mind:
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: Of Natural History
DeAngleo: Voodoo
Lewis Taylor: Lewis Taylor
Miles Davis: Nefertiti
Jaco Pastorius: (bass playing on) Joni Mitchell: Hejira
Carles Benavent: (bass playing on) Agüita que corre
Francois Rabbath: (bass playing on) The Sound of a Bass (pizz. on "Ode D'Espagne" was a fairly radical idea in 1963)
Andy Muson: (bass playing on) Jackie & Roy: Grass (Actually, it was seeing the group live in 1968, Andy playing Fender bass, that inspired me to get one, and play electric bass in jazz.)
