19.32 A letter in respect of an upcoming Guitar Craft course: I have an application… I am wondering what your take is on their participation in the upcoming course.
From the reply…
the work in the Circle will be aimed at developing a level of reliable & repeatable response-ability for performance in a public context. i have not seen this capacity in your applicant, personally or on guitar.
the question is then, what aim would they have, were they to know they would not be working in the OCG Circle?
it may be that there are others who aren't suitable for the OCG who attend.
i intend to address this formally in the near future. the quick answer is, we don't have professionally accredited behavioural psychologists & therapists on our staff. so, our required standard of participation is normal-abnormal. that is: physically, psychologically & emotionally functional & able to meet the demands of contemporary life; and on a GC course, +10%.
beyond this, we are unable to give the level of support that is properly required; quite apart from the issue of liability to others if a student became dysfunctional, compulsive in their behaviours, unable to manage anger issues, or had problems with professionally-prescribed medication.
hernan & i discussed, at the airport before i left, the problems we have with disturbed characters on courses. the amount of energy needed to contain one person, and europe has had compulsives, paranoids, manic depressives & substance abusers as regular attendees, has undermined what i see as our proper work.
we accept everyone as they arrive, but the standard of acceptance is now normal-abnormal. abnormal is too far for the particular future i see, although acknowledging that there are those within the Team whose work, perhaps vocation, is in this area.
An evening of practising ahead. Hooray!
