Bill Rieflin's Diary

friends's and families's

17:13.  texas time.  austin.

post-soundcheck, i sit backstage in my room (in my own private dressing room!!).
RF is onstage, preparing the evening’s bellscapes.  i watched & listened to soundcheck from the mixing desk.
it’s very interesting (and useful!) to be an audient for the band i’m actually in.
as far as i know, i’m the only one in this current KC incarnation
to have been so (T-Lev has had an earlier, similarish experience but for a different KC edition).

immediately, the most notable thing about soundcheck is volume.
you don’t usually get to hear music this loud unless you go to a gig.
and this band sounds really good when the viscera shakes.
for the record, i’m not a fan of loud music.  i never listen to Loud at home.
and my recording/mixing levels are always under sane.
but this is a good loud.  it tickles the ribs without hurting the ears.

.

supper is soon.  normally, i would dine like a sparrow
in advance of the show: eating enough to keep me
going for the next few hours, but not so much as to make
the body & mind sluggy.  sluggish.  slugsome.  slugadellic.
however, tonight i’m a civilian.  if i want to go for it i can, and the show
won’t suffer.  well, i might.
one of the many bonuses of not-performing.

18:11.  i even ate dessert: an entire banana.  whee.

19:20.  just checked in with chris gibson (in his own private dressing room!!)
who was getting his tai chi on.  a few months ago, i re-began tai chi classes.
tony is another tai chi guy, and we had talked about tai chi-ing together on the road.
instead, perhaps tony & chris will join forces.  if so, tony can teach me some new moves for next time.

.

another bonus of not-performing:
i won’t be wearing nice clothes during a king crimson gig.
i could, but that might be indiscreet.

.

backstage.  nine fists.  a first.  nine fists en-fisting.
i take position at the sound desk with chris porter and sat-nav dave.
a few pieces in, i begin seat hopping for new audio perspectives.

at half-time, i bump into david singleton, manager/minister-dude, fresh off the
boat from englandtown.  we share & trade comments & experiences.
since i’ve never seen a KC show, i wanted to know how this one compared.
unsurprisingly, our views correspond.
i didn’t look in on the boys, not being a performer and wanting to keep out of the way.
also, to avoid the question, “how was it??”
i am not a fan of the halftime show deconstruction, and i avoid it when i can.
which is exactly what i didn’t do with david.  therefore, it was obviously unavoidable.

for the 2nd set i did a little more bouncing around the auditorium.  the band and sound
settled in more and i really enjoyed it.

return backstage for après-show de-fisting.  and we’re off and running.
