Soundscapes were, Fripp suggested, “part of an ongoing exploration of how one might be a musician, professional musician, and human being simultaneously, and how music might enter our sorry world, despite all our efforts to keep it out.” Through soundscapes Fripp explores what is arguably his most expansive musical canvas as a solo artist. As the heaving electronic processing throws the notes into a chaotic whirl, the effect is as disturbing as it is disorientating, at times sounding not unlike a contemporary classical mass, terse, abrasive motifs shimmer and transform into ambiguous whispers of uncertain pitch and tonality. Finding a way through this challenging terrain comes moments of reflection and aching beauty, commanding a calming still spot within the turbulence of the dramatic universe around us.
