Although short in duration these three scapes together resonate between the ears long after they’ve faded away. After the first moves through some familiar tones and motifs that act as a kind of scene setter, the second piece lets rip with some acidic lines that jolt the attention. The third soundscape seemingly opens up a strange ethereal place where notions of clock time become redundant and the music takes over. If you’re a long-term soundscapes listener this will sound instantly familiar yet it feels while feeling as though slowly moving into an entirely new mode of expression. It’s timeless stuff and is quite simply exquisite. Music like this is a gift.
Fripp’s diary notes, “A strange audience this evening, very different in character to last night. Two flashes brought the show to an end after the first encore – VROOOM. It astonishes me that people act as if they believe their behaviour has no effect. In this case, this behaviour had the effect of bringing the show to an end.”
