Trey Gunn once remarked that one of the challenges of the Double Trio was finding the space in which to operate especially when it came to the sextet tackling the pieces from the ‘80s. The unit were so tight, Gunn commented, that it was never going to be easy to find an appropriate part. With Frame By Frame, Gunn’s work is located within the run of interlocking parts but is more easily ascribed playing the sign-off theme prior to the track’s end of the track. Similar embellishments are heard in the verses of Matte Kudasai, and on Three Of A Perfect Pair, harmonic doubling on the main riff and a spotlight break entwines around Fripp’s brief solo. Gunn’s presence carries most of the melodic content against Levin’s rhythmic undulations during the Two Sticks improv, where they continue into Elephant Talk. When it comes to Indiscipline, it’s every man for himself!
