Elephant Talk

Mister Stormy has delved into the multi-tracks from the Discipline album and has isolated the guitar parts for Elephant Talk. Here we get a ringside seat as Fripp and Belew work through their conversational parts. We take this sound almost for granted but, as Adrian told Trouser Press’ David Fricke, he initially struggled to find himself in the early days of the band.

“Belew had been rehearsing with a Roland guitar like Fripp's, trying to adapt his style of playing!a rubbery, feedback-heavy sound compared to Fripp's liquid distortion and staccato peal-outs!to an unfamiliar instrument; he was grappling with lyric writing as well. By the third week Belew was a nervous wreck.

"Then I realized, 'Hey, I'm not playing my guitar. I'm just basically sounding like Robert. Where's my voice in this?' So I picked up my Stratocaster, restrung it, and everything changed...When I started making my sounds and doing my thing, everybody kept saying, 'Yeah, Adrian, you're finally into the band.' I only came into my own in the fourth week, just before the live concerts started."”

Having heard this song on the Discipline album countless times, listening to the isolated guitars as a guitarist is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Some absolutely marvelous tones on these tracks, and the articulation of the notes borders perfection... I can only imagine the pride and ecstasy one would have felt in the moment of achieving such a fine recording! Adrian and Robert (and KC greater, of course) are truly gifts to music!
