I understand why some people prefer the edit of "Asbury Park". However, it sounds like after the USA cut ends it goes into an entirely different improv, as if it’s 2 different attempts, all within the same track. The last 4 minutes aren’t as solid and it sadly peters off with no real close, but it’s still great! I’ll take it! It’s still one of the most excellent examples of KC improv ever. But the real revelation here (since our lives were already changed by "Asbury Park" in USA) is what comes after the edit on "Easy Money" WOW Honestly, it’s the best "Easy Money" I can think of ever hearing. It’s SO amazing. If it were a separate track labeled itself an improv it would stand alone like that too. It’s a really incredible display of the power of this group. I’d pay 10 dollars just to hear another "Easy Money" like this. There must have been more, it has so much potential for expansion.

I have this show on compact disk when it was released 5 years ago, and played it in my car for the first time the day it arrived in the mail, hotly anticipating the full versions of the improv and Easy $$. The latter was outrageous, given that I am a fan of any Crimso use of the Hohner Pianet, also Fripp’s psychotic sustained fuzz guitar solo; but poor David Cross seems to gotten a little lost in the beginning of the improv. He hits a couple of bad notes on the mellotron as the piece begins to unfold. Otherwise, a good concert. One question: did Fripp make any announcements to the audience that night? The concert is pure music, with no Fripp banter. Can anyone who might have been there remember if Robert Fripp said anything into the mic that night, and, if so, what did he say? Thank you in advance.

While its fantastic to hear the entire Easy Money from Asbury, truncated on the USA album. You older Crimson fans know of what I speak. But the real star here is Fracture. For my money it’s the most satisfying and intense one I’ve heard. I have the Great Deceiver box set and for me that’s the gospel, but this Asbury Park version is better than any I’ve heard. Starless is an absolute monster too.

I was there for this show, at the Casino. I took a bus by myself from north Jersey. It was general admission, with no seating on the ground floor. Though at the front end of the line, I opted for an upstairs center first row seat to enjoy a panoramic view and stereo sound. One outta two wasn’t bad. The view was great but the acoustics in the concrete cavern were terrible and I regretted not being closer. Nonetheless this was my only regret. I’ll always remember Bill’s drum roll and rim shot, starting the funk-driven improv instead of an anticipated free-form one. Fripp sitting in the dark the entire show, no doubt pretentious to some but cool to me. A beautiful Exiles. The suprise of the Mellotron at the last ascendance of Fracture. I still love the Mellotron! And Starless heard for the first time. There was only one way to descibe that moment: King Crimson. Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, but nonetheless I thank Fripp and DGM for these exhaustive archive releases.

To answer the question. The show was at the Casino. Iwas there that night. Funny I just drove by there last night. Crimson never played Convention Hall but did play the Sunshine Inn and the paramont theater

In answer to your question of whether or not this show took place at the Casino Arena or Convention Hall, both venues were used to host rock shows during the 70’s. As a New Jersey native, I had seen shows at both locations (they were at opposite ends of the boardwalk from each other in Asbury Park with Convention Hall being the larger venue of the two). So, the Casino Arena location is more than likely correct.

I was at this show too (we were either the first or second on line to get in - waited for hours). Just want to make a correction to the previous post: I believe the opening act was the Climax Blues Band. And wasn’t Alison Steele ("the night bird" -Crimhead and nighttime dj at WNEW FM) acting as MC that night?
Golden Earring were indeed circulating at the time. I believe they opened for The Who at the Garden earlier that same month and maybe for Crimso at their "last" ever concert later that summer in Central Park.

Wow! I was at that concert, and remember shouldering my way right up to the front of the crowd. Drove to Asbury Park from Bethlehem, PA (where some time earlier I’d caught Lizard/Islands-era KC at a gig at Lehigh University) with my friend Lee Hedden. As expected, the band totally blew my mind. Always felt proud of having been at the show excerpted in the Asbury Park improv on USA, and now I can listen to the entire performance, over and over again. Wow! Thanks, RF! Well obviously one of the 3 best concert of this incarnation. The top one for me was Amsterdam 23rd 1973(The night watch) The boring Fripp and Eno opens for the WALK ON ...(just enough not to get bored by their divagations) I prefer ”Neil Young’s Walk on” song! (Got that 45 hanging in my barn) ”Lark’s tongue...II” follows powerfull as usual but with a sparking fire in it ...same as ”Lament” The real stuff, exceptionnal stuff is ”Exiles” one of the 3 the best songs of this incarnation with the Studio version of ”Starless” and ”Fallen Angel” Now This is it!All what KC (in that incarnation) tried to achieve in melodies, are in those 3 songs and that version is so great for the final solo of Mr Fripp!And the amazing Lament of Wetton crying ”OH”in such a powefull way! But the version of Amsterdam in the opening is a lot darker, more complex and more European! We can see How In Absury park the feeling of the USA and it’s influence on the playing of the band! But where Amsterdam fails to top Absury park is in the Final solo of Fripp! way better in Absury,,,But Brufors ’s final is more powerfull in Amsterdam But Cross is a lot more inventive in Amsterdam! but something indefinite powerfull and mysterious is happening in Absury,,,was it the beginning of the sunset that put Mr Fripp’s guitar on fire? The improvisation of ”Absury park” the next cut proves that Fripp is really trying to bring out Fripp in a sensational way! It’s an Amazing improvisation with surprises like the guitar tempo around 4 minutes 30 and right after a switch that will rock and go in a Hitckock way of anguish and terror! with a part of jazzy stuff(around 8’20) to catch your breath, groove on your ass and get your cock hard if you’r kissing your girlfriend! This music makes me want to go in bed and try something else very hard! Watch out that your tatoos don’t fall on the floor kid! Take the ” money” home baby! and throw it on the floor! because i just robbed a bank and we gonna make love on that ”Easy money of Absury Park!” Then i will go in jail but it will be worth it! I want to orgasm with you on this final solo of Fripp aand then i will be left ”starless” and i will go szhizoid behind the wall for part of the 21st century but it will habe, and be worth it! The final gigs from the 1974 King Crimson are the most powerful and ones. However, from these performances, Asbury Park is the most tight and intense of them. Despite the tensions and wearyness, the bands shows extreme musicianship, brutal force and creativity. The path of destruction that Larks’ Tongues In Aspic - Part II leaves is only one of the highlights of the show, differently from the USA album, there isn’t any of Jobson’s overdubs, he did a very good job, but the original is better. Lament is ferocious and Exiles is hauntingly beutiful. For those who were hopeless about ever discovering what musical wonders were existing after the editions on the Improv: Asbury Park and Easy Money, well, here’s your chance. Also, there’s a smashing version of Fracture and Starless emerges victorious from the battle. This version of 21st Century Schizoid Man is a must-have. From start to finish, this concert is the most forceful from this incarnation of the Mighty Beast. An essential item to every Crimhead.

Buy the damn thing. It is a wonderful experience.
However . . . . I must agree with gnostic on one HUGE point.
And maybe I’m underhandedly commending Fripp’s genious at the board . . .
Having played the F*ck out of my vinyl copy for so many years, that piece has become a part of me. Like a good friend . . . And the "unedited" jam is driving me to absolute distraction. I love David Cross’ work. But the vinyl is just so perfect, I cannot believe the other 3 could play through the violin track that was originally part of the show. I know it’s an "Improv" but DC just played thru the most beautiful 2 minutes of KC there are/were during that jam. That one piece is so distracting to me with the original violins, I must confess to taking a (non vinyl) copy of the original Jam and pasting the newly available ending to it. I then dropped it back where it belongs in my CD & I am continually "stunned" every time I hear it (which was this morning :-)
Sorry to offend, but that one piece was/IS sooo satisfying the way it was (and I do love the tail), it’s the only way I can listen to it. Fripp knew "exactly" what he was doing when he redid this piece for the LP, and I must heartily thank him for having ears, close to my heart.
All in all though - A total 5 Star experience

The only reason I do NOT give this one the 5 Stars is....ok.......actually there are 2 reasons. First off, the sound quality is good, but for some reason NOT as good or "Excellent"...as The Great Deceiver boxed set sound was. I bought the CD release of this and was expecting killer sound quality. Alas, Bruford’s bass drum sound doesn’t reverberate and bounce off of my walls quite as much as that one did. In fact, the quality is only slightly better than the original vinyl sound was,.....Perhaps Fripp and Co. did not use the same technology and/or software as in 1992? Second, I understand completely why Fripp was hesitant....shall we say?....to release the REAL mix of the improv. David Cross hits a number of bad notes on his Hohner and it just sounds horrible! It was a good idea to leave that off. But the cut and snip of Easy $$? What a horrible mistake that was, that track rocks out! Anyway, that is my review.

This is my first download from the DGM Live site and what an easy, smooth, enjoyable process and experience it was. So easy to join and submit CC info and so easy to download the files. Thanks to Mr Fripp and company for doing this right and offering the Crimso fanatics what they want at a great price, too.
For anyone not used to FLAC files, one great freeware program that will play them without the need to convert them to any other format, is the VLC Media Player (it’s like the Swiss Army Knife of media players) for various operating systems.
And the show itself? Excellent... so happy to finally hear and experience and own the full, uncut version.. I enjoyed USA for many years since it’s release, but this is "da bomb".. only wish it could have been available uncut all those years ago.
Mr Fripp.. thank you again for making this available, and all the other great archived shows. Long may you run :)

Why didn’t I get this sooner? They are en fuego. The part of Asbury Park edited off of USA is so funky I hurt my shoulder head-bobbing to it on the bus.
Maybe the best versions of everything on the setlist. You hear sh*t like this and you wonder what the f*ck happened to good Rock Music.

Yesterday I installed my first ever PC at home (after using one at the office for years, but without having any possibility to download or even listen to music), and a few hours later I bought the FLAC version of this show and to my surprise (because I’m not really a PC pro ;-) half an hour later the sound of Larks tongues in Aspic was playing in my headphones. Fantastic performance, fantastic sound..and the idea and presentation behind DGM live is also brilliant and I hope that other bands will do the same. Thumbs up!

I absolutely adore this album. Whenever I moved I would use the Asbury Park cut, originally the first track on the album, to balance the sound in my new digs. Agree with what many others have said, contains a lot of "best" versions. And John Wetton left to join who?

Reiterating what most all have said about this 1974 Crim classic: this rocks. Youre buying the best version of Larks’ II, the best version of Lament, the best version of Exiles, the best version of Fracture, and my personal favorite version of Easy Money. Fripp’s solo during the Easy Money improv is easily the most heartfelt of any I have heard during the 73-74 era. The Asbury Park improv is also hot, but I feel that Cross takes away more than he gives during this improv. If its improvs your looking for, the Great Deceiver Box set is the best, but each composition here is tight.

What the teaser paragraph fails to mention - indeed it misleads by invoking Jobson’s name - is that the ’...Schizoid Man’ on this download IS NOT the one for which he performed the overdub found on the USA album [just reissued in stores]....................... The Schizoid Man appearing here was released on the 5-versions "Schizoid Man" CDep from 1996 and is indeed from the Asbury Park, NJ show. Reason enough in itself to download this masterpiece!......................................... (The ’...Schizoid Man’ found on the USA album was actually taken from the June 30th Providence, RI show [the day before the last show at Central Park NY]. As Cross disliked the perennial encore number "21st Century Schizoid Man", his performances during them, when viewed in the hindsight of the recordings, were often weak - Fripp felt the necessity to overdub a studio solo by Eddie Jobson over Cross’s part when the album was released. You can hear that same performance un-retouched with Cross in place in the ’Great Deceiver’ box set’s Providence section).................................But these extremely ball-busting (the Wetton-Bruford rhythm section!) live versions are to die for - check out the lengthy improv piece "Asbury Park"- Crimso fans cannot do without!!!

I’m an old die-hard fan of older Crimso. USA was always one of my favorite albums. I think I still have an old half-speed master LP of USA up in the attic somewhere. But this! This brings the show into a whole new light for me. Its sounds unprocessed, raw, natural, unproduced if you will. Just excellent. You can feel the energy. And, the sound quality is perfect. As per usual Mr. Fripp, Bravo. I had to jump through a few techno hoops to burn it. But, it was worth every minute and every penny. I only hope even more of the old stuff comes out in this format. This is Classic King Crimson at their best. Highly recommended.

I am a big lifelong King Crimson fan. The "Red" period lineup of Fripp/Wetton/Bruford/Cross is by far my favorite. This performance of that lineup is instrumentally and technically as good as it gets. Any King Crimson fan from any era will be amazed at the sound quality captured by this crisp/edgy and moving performance by the band. With that being said there is one large flaw here. On the performance of one of the most notable songs from this era, Straless", John Wetton, the Singer/Bassist whom I admire very much and have seen several times, makes chopped liver out of the lyrics. On the first verse he starts out singing the opening line to the second verse, then realizes his mistake and starts singing the opening line to the song, then switches back to the second verse. When he starts singing the second verse, he starts mixing up the words and is intertwining lyrics between the second and third verses. By the third and final verse poor John is so frustrated, that he completely improvises, singing about cats and carney shows. LOL! In spite of this I still highly recommend purchasing this music to anyone who is even has the slightest interest in the band. Regards, Jamie Craig

On the back cover of the Starless & Bible Black album the card reads "This Night Wounds Time". This version of the USA album not only wounds time, it also goes in for the kill. On a great night King Crimson were the most dangerous live playing band to ever grace a stage and this is one of the gigs that proves just that. There are some firey moments on this disc but also some passages that you can easily lose yourself in, where the music moves in unexpected directions with surprising outcomes. Yes it’s great to have David Cross’s parts reinstated so we can hear the gig as nature intended but it’s also great to hear the missing pieces of the music. Asbury Park and Easy Money are twice as amazing as when we all first heard these pieces and this version of Schizoid Man will burn the paint off of your walls. Stunning. Rewarding. Beautiful. All we need now is the Penn State University gig in its entirety to have a full glimpse of the best and four last concerts from KC ’73-’74. About Asbury Park, what can I say? I’ve always treasured the Schizoid Man only previously available on the Schizoid Man ep, a bit clumsier than the Providence version that made it to USA but equally electrifying and stunning. The rest of the concert doesn’t let you down either, but rather rewards the listener again and again with repeated listenings. The full Asbury Park improv is an amazing display of how the band was telepathical at this point, despite the tension within the band at that point, and Larks’ Tongues Part II and Exiles have always been hailed as the ultimate live versions of these songs in my humble opinion, and to hear the full Easy Money and discover that from quiet and introspective it went to more violent grounds before reaching a calming conclusion--KC ’73-’74 never cease to amaze me, and this concert is more than proof of it. It was definitely a good night for the quartet. Starless is beautiful even though the violin solo is replaced by the Hohner electric piano from Cross--maybe his frustrations got to him, turning him to play the piano rather than the violin at these last shows, but it’s still great and really electrifying. The whole atmosphere in the Casino concert was electrifying, for the lack of better words. There’s a magic surrounding the four last concerts by this inkcarnation that just makes the listener want for more, hence my advice in repeated listenings; they are ultimately rewarding. And Fracture is powerful and bold, as is Schizoid Man. I can’t be nothing but thankful for Fripp, Singleton and DGM to allow us to have a full view in such a stunning (and as a whole the best in my opinion) gig from the last four KC ’73-’74 concerts. Now all we have to do is join together and petition for the Penn State University gig as aforementioned; after all, "Is There Life Out There?" and "Easy Money" are excellent, and it’s almost unbelievable that a sick Fripp could play so beautifully (remember the bad clams the previous day in Asbury Park?) and as such, it’s worth hearing the whole concert if possible. Anyways, my acknowledgements to those involved in allowing us to hear the Casino show in its entirety. I’ll be definitely hearing it over and over again. If there are unbelievers that this was the best musical happening of 1974, please refer them to Providence, Asbury Park, Central Park, and the snippets from Penn State. Or just play Asbury Park and watch jaws dropping in awe. I know there are many people in such situation.

Don’t hesitate - MP3 downloading was seamless; recording sounds wonderful; playing is fiery... Put aside any concerns regarding audio quality or length of applause. A $10 well-spent in my book. Kudos as well to the DGM crew for their work in making this available to the public. David Singleton is the unsung Rudy Van Gelder of our time... I haven’t heard the Asbury Park jam in a long time. I have the vinyl, but the pressing was horrible! The audio is relatively clear on this download. The difficulty for me is trying to filter out Cross’ nonsense on Asbury Park. I grew up with it a different way! Such a distraction from Fripp’s greatest work. Honestly, free jams are difficult to enjoy with any four-piece group since there’s too much competition in the mid-range spectrum. The guitar work is in the top 5 of all time in my book. What a chemistry with Bruford and Wetton! Love Wetton’s bass sound and Bill’s typical snappy snare work with intelligent syncopations.

This show is amazing and definatly worth the money. In fact, it’s worth it alone just to finally have an extended and uncut Easy Money.
However, I really just wanted to plead to DGM to show which track lengths indicate the length of the performed song or the length of the track, because there is an important difference. For instance, on Starless it says 15:50, but there is over 1 minute of applause. I wouldn’t pay 1 penny to hear the applause, but I pay 9.95 to hear a 15+ minute version of Starless. It really isn’t fair to be expecting a full 15:50, or at least 15:30 of music and not get it completely. That minute could be the difference between the same old Starless and a priceless improv or jam. In this particular case the song is extended as it is, but not as long as I thought.
So please, DGM, like it was on the track lengths for The Great Deceiver box set, indicate what time the SONG ends and what time the TRACK ends.
otherwise, brilliant show. Definately buy it.

Absolutely great and astonishing! Fripp, Wetton and Bruford at their best, better than in studio recs. Maybe Dave Cross a little in the shade, but anyway balanced in the general sound economy. Once again, DGM Live has struck gold with the download release of King Crimson’s famous 1974 concert in Asbury Park, NJ.
As most enthusiasts may know, this concert formed the basis of the band’s "USA" live album and marked the end of the Fripp/Wetton/Cross/Bruford era. When the album was released, much of David Cross’s violin work was eliminated and replaced by the studio overdubs of Roxy Music member Eddie Jobson. Also, the rolicking jam entitled "Asbury Park" and the performance of "Easy Money" were drastically edited and incomplete.
Now, with the release of this concert as an MP3, we can hear the Asbury Park show in its entirety, complete and uncut and free of any post-production overdubs. The end result is an absolutely stunning revelation and shows this edition of King Crimson at the peak of their musical powers. The full-length jams of "Easy Money" reveal the hidden magic that left us scratching our heads for so many years as is on "Asbury Park" which runs close to five minutes longer than that on "USA".
Other highlights include a foot-to-the-metal version of "Larks Tongues Part 2" which opens the concert, an emotionally drenched "Exiles" and an insanity-filled free-for-all in "21st Century Schizoid Man" which, by the way, is included here with a clean lead vocal instead of the distortion-treated one on "USA".
Rest assured, this is an exciting and revealing listen. This is exactly what was performed in Asbury Park in June 1974 without any treatments, enhancements or any other stuff. The end result is one of the best concerts ever given by this line-up of King Crimson. It’s right up there with the November 1973 concert at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

No question about it, the sound quality and the performances here are top rate. If you don’t have the cd issue of USA, there’s no reason to hesitate: buy this download. On that I base my 5 star rating. Less obvious is the value for those of us who have the cd. My guess is that if you have to ask, you shouldn’t bother, while if, like many of us, you knew without thinking about it that this was one you wanted, you won’t be disappointed. I’m among those who wanted to see this release--Cross’s contribution returned and no edits--for the USA cd. To be fair, there would have been complaints no matter what decision was made: someone wouldn’t like it. I agree with others who have said that the improv is nice to have, but the original edits were good choices, while the extended "Easy Money" is incredible, and may be worth the price of the download on is own. It’s very nice to finally have the full set with the "real" violinist.

An excellent download offering. Sound quality is spectacular and I’ll add to the voices praising the more defined quality and clarity of the recording of David Cross’ contribution to the group. Between this show, the Providence gig from 6.30.74 on The Great Deceiver, and the Central Park 7.1.74 show (KCCC10), this band was really stepping out in fine fashion. Keep ’em coming!

For years now I was wondering how the Asbury Park Improv and Easy Money continued beyond what was on the (then vinyl) record. The Improv has always been my fave piece of KC music and I am glad I now have it complete. Having said that, the parts that were cut out are not as good as the parts that did make it onto the record (so I can understand why it was done that way in order to fit on a vinyl record) but still am very glad to have it all now.
Also postproduction and overdubs made USA a bit more polished than the versions here that are a bit rougher - a very nice release overall, highly recommended!

Just downloaded and listened to "Casino-Live in Asbury Park,NJ-June 28, 1974 and I’m very impressed. It’s a great show and it’s a privilege to finally hear the complete versions of "Easy Money" and "Asbury Park" and it’s also great to hear the show without the overdubs that were added to the USA album. It’s also great to have these King Crimson concerts available online (and as an added bouns, you can also download the cover art which includes the personnel credits and track listings). Highly recommended if you’re a fan of the mid ’70s edition of King Crimson. Bravo to DGM Live and I’ll be looking forward to hearing more shows from the Crimson llive archive.

Love the version of Asbury Park you can actually hear Cross’s Fuzzed out electric piano fills. Great Sound Quality, compared to the vinyl , Why they overdubbed Ediie Jobson over Cross i’ll never know. Ill be buying more . Thanks DGM

This is the way I always envisioned the `74 band
sounding. An abrasive metallic excellence. LTIA II is
breathtaking........pounding and electric. The one thing that sticks
out here on this recording is how perfectly David Cross` violin is
placed in the mix.....lots of presense....well worth the money and
highly recommended

Pure heaven... Frankly one asks why this recording got "meddled"
with??? Very strong perfomances and very enlightening in understanding
Roberts oft stated opinions about the band at this stage in its
