King Crimson Mark 2? 2 albums in 30 years and now we have 12 live albums in the last couple of years. Bit like buses really.
Pittsburgh is a show where, bearing in mind the circumstances, the band could be excused for going through the motions however the show is well up to snuff. Crimso was always a band that comes across as highbrow and catering for the serious music fan however at this gig there are some wonderfully humerous moments. Pictures and Formentera are despatched with vigour and the Sailors Tale contains one of Robert’s "patented sustained fuzz tone solos". Cirkus sounds a bit destracted however Ladies Of The Road is a hoot, Ian tries to arrange a party with a member of the audience, Robert sounds lost but plays some hilarious interludes which even makes Boz laugh. The backing vocals on the chorus fall apart completely in a Pythonesque refrain. As a rule drum solos should be locked in a quiet room preserved in 1970s formaldehyde however Groon always captures the attention with the inspired use of the VSC3. Schizoid Man almost equals the Wilmington version with a blistering (frustrated?) guitar solo but lacks the Mel Collins sax solo. Improv I is a forerunner of Earthbound but is far more disjointed and Robert saves the day by leading the band into a lovely version of Cadence.
An essential purchase if only to prove that, hey, this is Crimso with a sense of humour

Intriguing Show Mon., Sep 18, 2006

This show is completely unintelligible unless one is aware of the turmoil in the band at this point. Of course, anyone visiting here almost surely knows their Crim history, so it’s a bit of a moot point, but a show Read more

Pretty good playing - annoying banter Mon., Jun 5, 2006

I think that they play very well musically - just skip the banter between the pieces. It is quite obviuos that it was time to break up that formation of KC and move on to the next Read more

I Must Have Been Drunk at The Time Fri., Jun 2, 2006

A silly, embarrassing, likely drunken stupor of a performance. Boz Burrell should have been forced to give back his Crimson sneakers after this show. When asked to join, John Wetton had the good sense to avoid this Read more
