17.31 World HQ. A late arrival back from London last night. The
first of yesterday evening’s two events for T & myself: a
presentation in Soho House of the new, revamped &
about-to-be-relaunched Roundhouse. Soho House is a fashionable members’
club & meeting place with bars & restaurants, primarily for
media persons. The second: a birthday dinner in a West End Italian
restaurant. Of perhaps 17 people at the restaurant table perhaps 10
were smokers, and at any time half-a-dozen were smoking. A wonderful,
warm affair covered by a smoke cloud. I am not yet recovered. And
both events were smoking events. I find this astonishing, given current
available info; suggesting that reasonable argument is insufficient to
change behaviour, even the behaviour of reasonable people. At
lunchtime: an interview at home in Bredonborough with Robert Sandall,
who trained up from London. Then to World HQ for stuff.
